About the District

The Florida District — UUA is one of 20 such regional groupings of congregations. Comprising Florida [less the panhandle], Valdosta, Georgia, and the US Virgin Islands, the District serves 44 affiliated and 3 emerging congregations, representing over 5,000 Unitarian Universalists.

As part of the Unitarian Universalist structure, the Florida District serves to provide leadership training, organizational and program development to the member congregations, particularly with regard to “best practices” work. Additionally, through its staff, the District provides direct consultation to congregational leaders to promote healthy and vital congregational life.

The Florida District is governed by a 9 member Board of Directors elected by delegates to the Annual District Assembly in April of each year. Following the practice of “policy governance,” the Board establishes the goals or Ends of the District in consultation with the congregations.

The Board delegates the implementation of these Ends to the District Executive, The Reverend Kenneth G. Hurto ] who in turn directs the activities of Life-span Educational Consultant Connie Goodbread, a team of trained “healthy congregations” consultants, and a small number of “councils.” The District staff are co-employed by the UUA and thus also serve as the direct link to congregations with regard to ministerial transitions, conflict mediation, and promoting the ministries and programs of the larger Unitarian Universalist movement. Within the Florida District, four additional affiliated geographic “clusters” which provide additional regional conferences and training. The District Office is the center for information around the district. Mailing lists of congregational officers, district officers, and committee chairs are maintained. A monthly “packet” publicizes district-wide events, workshops, meetings, and resources. Additionally, the Office publishes a twice-monthly email newsletter with program updates and notes from our leadership for any interested member of our congregations.
