UUA Trustee Report – January 2009

Joan Lund
Boston, MA, January 14 – 18, 2009

By the time you read this writing our new U. S. President will be working harder than we can imagine, leading our nation on new, and long-awaited path. But as I begin this report I am watching his Inauguration as our 44th President, having gratefully returned from Boston yesterday. The bitter cold winter weather and a good deal of snow prompted the word “gratefully” in the previous sentence. As usual the days devoted to serving as your Florida District Trustee were busy and productive. This report will be my observations, organized by reports/topics, and loosely by sequence. I cannot begin to cover it all! As always if you have questions or comments in general, please email/telephone me at jlund@uua.org or 813-931-9727. In addition you can go to the UUA website www.uua.org for detailed reports by the staff and Rev. Bill Sinkford, and the Board of Trustees (BOT) Packet which was posted before the meeting. A summary of BOT passed motions are at the end of this report. BOT minutes can be read on the UUA web site. But the minutes lag behind by one Board meeting because they must be approved by the BOT.

On Wednesday afternoon the Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression/Multiculturalism Monitoring and Assessment Team (AROMCT) planned for the scheduled April multiculturalism training. We developed a list of possible trainers for that training and for subsequent Board meetings. Our Team has read Speaking Treason Fluently, Tim Wise, and In Between, Mark Morrison-Reed. As your Trustee and a person much concerned with our District and congregational anti-oppression work I highly recommend these two books. In March the AROMCT and Board members will participate in a Webinar or conference call hopefully with Rev. Mark Morrison-Reed, to discuss the book.

Working Groups (WG)
The five WGs historically have met on Friday morning and work through the lunch hour until mid-afternoon. During this BOT meeting the WGs met on Wednesday Continue Reading »
